More Information
Product Name Anti-CD44 (HCAM) Monoclonal Antibody
Description The protein encoded by this gene is a cell-surface glycoprotein involved in cell-cell interactions, cell adhesion and migration. It is a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and can also interact with other ligands, such as osteopontin, collagens, and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). This protein participates in a wide variety of cellular functions including lymphocyte activation, recirculation and homing, hematopoiesis, and tumor metastasis. Transcripts for this gene undergo complex alternative splicing that results in many functionally distinct isoforms, however, the full length nature of some of these variants has not been determined. Alternative splicing is the basis for the structural and functional diversity of this protein, and may be related to tumor metastasis. CD 44 is a transmembrane protein expressed by lymphocytes and several normal epithelial cells. It is involved in lymphocyte homing. T-lymphocyte activation, interaction with hyaluronic acid and may act as an adhesion molecule. The human CD44 is composed of 19 exons, 9 variably expressed due to alternative splicing of mRNA; standard CD44 (CD44s) is composed of exons 1-5 and 15-19. The loss of CD44s expression predicts unfavorable outcome in bladder cancers, squamous cell carcinomas of the skin, prostatic adenocarcinoma and neuroblastomas.
