Description | Exendin-4, also known as exenatide, is a high affinity glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist originally isolated from Heloderma suspectum venom. It has 50% amino acid homology to GLP-1 and a longer half-life in vivo, and potentiates glucose-induced insulin secretion in isolated rat islets. Exenatide is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus as an add-on treatment and has also been evaluated for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. |
